The Earthshot Prize 2022

The Earthshot prize is an award given to five winners that created some projects that could help our planet face some of the most important challenges nowadays. On 31 December 2019, Prince William announced the Earthshot prize after years of development. In particular, it would be given to five individuals or groups that had a significant impact in finding sustainable solutions for the planet according to five different categories, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals: “Protect and restore nature”, “Clean our air”, “Revive our oceans”, “Build a waste-free world” and “Fix our climate”. The five winners will receive £1 million prize money, a medal and access to a global network of professional support for their environmental solutions projects.

The first category, “Protect and restore nature”, focuses on repairing damaged ecosystems such as wetlands and forests, managing natural carbon stores and developing regenerative agriculture. “Clean our air” aims to transition to clean personal transportation, engaging citizens in collecting data and stopping burning forests. To “revive our oceans”, the Earthshot aims to reduce overfishing, which would undeniably benefit the marine ecosystems. The sector “Build a waste-free world” is interested in moving to waste-free foods, championing waste-free fashion and extending the life of goods. Finally, to “Fix our climate”, it is extremely important to reduce carbon emissions by using renewable energy, reducing methane emissions and constructing buildings for the future.

“The Earth is at a tipping point and we face a stark choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet, or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve. People can achieve great things. The next ten years present us with one of our greatest tests – a decade of action to repair the Earth.” Said Prince William during an interview for “The Guardian”.

This initiative will last for an entire decade, from 2021 to 2030. It was initially inspired by John F. Kennedy’s “Moonshot” programme of the 1960s which pushed toward mankind’s first steps on the Moon. The “Earthshot Prize” actually uses the same approach to foster immediate action against climate change. Prince William and David Attenborough launched the initiative for the first time in 2020, while the first edition occurred in 2021. In fact, the nominations for the inaugural prize ceremony opened on the 1st of November 2020 with a collaboration of 100 different partners in this project. The ceremony itself took place on 17th October 2021 at the Alexandra Palace in London.

For the second annual ceremony, the Earthshot prize 2022 will be held in Boston at the MGM Music Hall on the 2nd of December. From a list of fifteen finalists, five winners will be announced. This month the Prince and Princess of Wales visited the US for the first time after almost a decade to prepare for the Boston Earthshot Prize Awards.
